Which image format should you choose?

Each format is useful for a different kind of image or workflow.

WebP

A strong default for websites and sharing. It usually creates smaller files than JPEG or PNG while keeping good visual quality.

JPEG

Best for photographs when broad compatibility matters. It does not support transparency and uses lossy compression.

PNG

Best for graphics, screenshots, logos, and images that need transparency. Files can be larger because compression is lossless.

About the Image Format Converter

This browser-based converter changes supported raster images into PNG, JPEG, or WebP. It can also resize the image before download while preserving the original aspect ratio when the link control is enabled.

How image conversion works

The selected image is decoded by your browser and drawn onto a local Canvas. The Canvas is then exported in the chosen format and made available as a new downloadable file.

Quality and file size

JPEG and WebP use a quality setting. Lower values normally reduce file size but may introduce visible compression artifacts. PNG is lossless, so the quality control is disabled when PNG is selected.

Transparency

PNG and WebP can preserve transparent pixels. JPEG cannot, so this tool fills transparent areas with the background color you choose before creating the JPEG.

Animated GIFs

If an animated GIF is selected, the converter uses the first decoded frame. The downloaded PNG, JPEG, or WebP file will not retain the animation.

Metadata and orientation

Canvas export usually removes camera metadata, location data, comments, and other embedded information. The visual orientation displayed by your browser is used, but original metadata and print-DPI settings are not preserved.

Privacy

Your image is not sent to Toolslight or another server. It remains on your device throughout selection, conversion, preview, and download.
