About the Percentage Calculator

A percentage represents a number as a fraction of 100. For example, 35% is the same as 0.35 or 35/100. Percentages are commonly used for grades, discounts, taxes, tips, growth, comparisons, profit, and statistics.

The basic percentage formula

The central relationship is P × V = R, where P is the percentage written as a decimal, V is the base value, and R is the result. This page can rearrange that relationship to solve any missing value.

Percentage change vs percentage difference

Percentage change compares a new value with an original value, so direction matters. Percentage difference compares two values symmetrically using their average, so the order does not matter.

Discounts, tax, tips, markup, and margin

A discount subtracts a percentage from the original price. Tax and tips add a percentage. Markup compares profit with cost, while profit margin compares profit with selling price.
