About the Tip Calculator
This calculator adds a chosen tip to a bill and divides the final amount equally between one or more people. You can enter tax separately, choose whether the tip should include that tax, and round the total when convenient.
How the calculation works
The selected percentage is multiplied by either the bill amount or the bill plus tax. The resulting tip is added to the full bill, and the final total is divided by the number of people.

Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?
Standard etiquette recommends tipping on the pre-tax bill subtotal, as the gratuity rewards personal service rather than government taxes. However, our calculator allows you to easily toggle "Include tax in tip calculation" if you prefer tipping on the post-tax total.
What is a standard tip percentage for dining out?
In the United States and Canada, 15% is standard for adequate service, 18% to 20% is typical for good to great service, and 25%+ is customary for exceptional dining experiences. Quick service or takeout commonly ranges from 10% to 15%.
How does the bill splitting calculation work?
The total bill (subtotal, optional tax, and chosen tip) is divided equally by the number of people entered. Each person pays an equal share of both the meal and the server's gratuity.
How does bill rounding work?
You can choose "Round total up" to round the entire check up to the nearest whole dollar/unit for simple cash payments, or "Round each share up" to make each individual contribution an even whole amount. Any rounding difference is tracked transparently.
Are my bill details stored or sent to a server?
No. 100% of the calculations, comparisons, image generation, and PDF downloads run entirely client-side in your web browser. No restaurant or payment data is ever stored or transmitted.
