About the Video Duration Calculator
Use this playback speed calculator to find the exact amount of time it will take to finish a YouTube video, online lecture, podcast, or audiobook when listening at faster speeds (like 1.5x or 2x).
Works with all platforms and formats
Whether you are trying to calculate podcast speed for your morning commute, find the finish time for a long Zoom recording, or check how much time you'll save on an Audible audiobook, the math is exactly the same.
How playback speed changes video duration
The formula for adjusted watch time is simple: adjusted duration = original duration / playback speed.
Keep in mind that playback speed changes time by division, not subtraction. Watching a video at 1.5x does not mean it takes "50% less time". A 60-minute video watched at 1.5x speed takes exactly 40 minutes (60 / 1.5). This saves you 20 minutes, which is a 33.3% reduction in time, not 50%.
How finish time is calculated
To find out what time you'll finish a video, the calculator takes your starting time and adds the adjusted duration (not the original length). If the resulting time crosses midnight, the calculator will clearly label it as the "next day" so you know exactly when you'll be done.
Common playback speed examples
- 1 hour at 1.25x = 48 minutes
- 1 hour at 1.5x = 40 minutes
- 1 hour at 1.75x = 34 minutes 17 seconds
- 1 hour at 2x = 30 minutes
Frequently Asked Questions FAQs
How long is a 1 hour video at 1.5x speed?
A 1 hour (60 minute) video watched at 1.5x playback speed takes exactly 40 minutes to finish. You save 20 minutes of watch time.
How do you calculate video duration at different speeds?
To calculate your adjusted watch time, simply divide the original video duration by the playback speed. For example, a 120-minute lecture at 2x speed equals 60 minutes (120 / 2 = 60). Our playback speed calculator does this math instantly for you.
Does this calculator work for YouTube, Podcasts, and Audiobooks?
Yes! Whether you are finding the podcast speed for your commute, calculating how long a YouTube video will take, or checking an audiobook's finish time, the math remains exactly the same. Just enter the total hours and minutes.
What happens if I want to know what time I will finish watching?
Our video finish time calculator lets you input your current local time (or any custom start time) and automatically adds the adjusted duration. It tells you the exact clock time you will finish the video.
Can I calculate the exact playback speed I need?
Yes. If you only have 30 minutes to watch a 45-minute video, you can use our Target Time feature. It will calculate the exact minimum playback speed (like 1.5x) you need to finish the video before your deadline.
